Stormy Month Continues

 Hi all, it's been a while but I'm back! It's been a stormy December so far and that will continue this week. A series of fronts and storms will batter the northwest through New Year's before the Pacific finally shuts down and a pattern change emerges.

Windy Christmas Eve

 It's gonna get windy tomorrow. How windy? Well that's the sixty seven thousand dollar question we've all been asking. The Setup An area of low pressure of the California coast will begin to consolidate and strengthen over the next 12 hours. As it does so, it will be moving north towards Washington and Oregon. The exact track and strength of the low pressure system will determine the magnitude of the winds tomorrow. So let's break down all the possibilities. 1. The EURO  The EURO has been portraying the weakest outcome for this system. The low strengthens down to the about 987 millibars, but the it moves inland over Oregon and Washington, resulting in gusts up to 45 MPH for most of the region. Windy? Sure, but nothing crazy. This would be our "run of the mill" wind event with some tree damage and scattered power outages.  2. Oregon Tornado and Impactful Storm Moving In

A very active period of weather will occur from tonight into tomorrow. But before I dive into that, I want to talk about the tornado that occurred near Rockaway beach in Oregon yesterday evening.  Tornado Yesterday, at approximately 9:24 PM, an EF-0 tornado with winds up to 85 mph occurred in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. It was likely a waterspout that made landfall on the beach. The tornado damaged fences and broke roof shingles off houses. It went through a school parking lot, picking up various items including a porta-potty and several dumpsters. It ripped a roof off of one of the garages in the vicinity. This tornado caused one minor injury. It had a maximum width of 150 yards and an approximate path of 0.25 miles. This is all based on the damage assessment performed by NWS of Portland, OR. Evening Update

 We are very close to tonight's snow potential and models still have no idea what will happen. Looking at Sattelite imagery, the low pressure we have been tracking looks to be a bit north of Hoquiam. How north this low goes will determine which area gets the most moisture. Earlier this area looked to be King County and the Central Sound, but now this area may have shifted a bit northwest. Northern King County and the Kitsap peninsula.  As I said earlier, this looks to be a bit more widespread in terms of moisture, but temps look to be more marginal so elevation will definitely aid with snow. Looking at the graphic below, the area circled in blue will have the most access to moisture tonight. In this area, places above 500 feet should see 2-8 inches of snow. Below that, 1-3 inches of snow seems likely.
